When fat-necked mule deer in the Mountain West begin to rut in early November, the experienced rifle hunter will be replacing his 30-degree sleeping bag and uninsulated boots from September archery with gear more favorable to the unpredictable, and often frigid, weather that characterizes late-season hunts in the Rocky Mountains.
